Treasurer’s Report:
T2.1 FM
reported on current status of the club’s bank account:
- As
of 6/5/02 the balance was $739.40, the primary source being membership
dues. This balance includes the
disbursements made for the Swindle dinner, however it does not include two
outstanding club reimbursements, see T2.1.b.
- On
6/5/02 the club wrote two reimbursement checks. The first check, in the amount of $40, was to Frank Mess to
cover the cost of opening the bank account. The second check, in the amount of $25, was to reimburse
Tony Ciampaglio for covering a member’s license plate fee. This brought the effect balance of the
account to: $674.40.
- The
Swindle Dinner’s cost was $1,020.60, with the club collecting $965 in
attendance fees. The Hyatt, at TC
bequest, did not charge for the room and waived the minimum attendee
requirement. The dinner’s cost
included the speaker, and two guests.
T2.2 FM
presented a report on membership dues:
- FM
requested that the club secretary cross reference the membership list with
his dues list.
- At
present, the club has received dues from 40 members. TC noted that this is a respectable
number given the age of the club and the number of alumni in the
community.
T2.3 FM
committed to having the club’s financial report completed and ready for review
by the next club meeting (July).
Secretary’s Report:
S2.1 Rather
than enjoying a pleasant evening at Little Havana, Lee was on her
honeymoon. Congratulations, Lee!
- Since
Lee was out, TC wasn’t sure if she had received any more club logo
entries. The July 1st
deadline was discussed again, and it was verified that the logo would be
selected at the next club meeting.
- Lee
received three membership applications at the Swindle Dinner.
- Finally,
the club newsletter his on hold pending Lee’s return. The summer deadline is in August.
Committee Reports:
Programs/Activities
C2.1 Scheduled
Speakers
- The
May 23rd evening was attended by 25 members. TC noted that this is on par with the
attendance that the DC chapter experiences (on a percentage basis).
- TC
initiated a discussion of the dinner location and the general level of
satisfaction with the evening. The
price seemed reasonable to the group, however there were some comments on
the location. FM mentioned
enjoying the evening at the Rusty Scupper last fall (Clough presentation),
and suggested that we investigate a location with “downtown/inner harbor”
ambiance. DL offered to review a
list of available conference locations in the Baltimore area. TC suggested that we investigate the “Engineer’s
Club” as a meeting location. This
would require locating an individual that is a member of both clubs so
s/he could sponsor events. One
item of general consensus was the benefit of a central location for these
events, however all opportunities should be investigated.
- TC
brought up the topic of this year’s two speakers. The GT Alumni web site has a list of
available speakers from both the academic and athletic departments. We should start to think about how we
should request, and when the events should be held.
C2.2 Summer Picnic: The topic of the Summer Picnic, given in honor of incoming
freshmen, was broached. DL volunteered
to head this effort, which will likely be held on August 3rd. FM presented a list of Howard Co. parks, and
mentioned that Centennial Park had pavilions for $95 that would seat 40
individuals. John Snead suggested Cedar
Lake Park, with a pavilion priced at $125 that would seat 60. The approved fee structure is a student plus
one guest free, all others $10 per individual.
DL will get notification to Lee so she can send the information to GT AA
for distribution to local incoming freshmen.
C2.3 Sports Watching
- A
location still has not been selected, and hence the search continues. Some of the possible locations are
Bateman’s in Towson and Jillians in Hanover.
C2.4 GT-MD
Football
- The
DC club has offered to combine our orders allowing us to qualify for the
reduced ticket price offered. They
charge $20 each while the normal price is $29. TC asked for opinions on the appropriate notification time
to which DL replied ‘no later than mid-July’. It seems that some people are already thinking about
securing tickets, so we need to send out the notification soon. TC suggested that we send out the
notice on July 1st with all checks being send directly to FM
C2.5 Recruiting
and Scholarships:
- DM
reported that three local students received the President’s Scholarship
recently, and that three club members were on hand to present the
awards.
- DM
had the application form for attending the Calvert Hall college fair, and
was going to submit a form to the Admissions department to cover the cost
of attendance.
- DM
verified that Dwayne was able to mail the student information gathered at
the Anne Arundel CC college fair to the Admissions department.
C2.6 Web
Activities
- TC
mentioned that Liz already has photos from the Swindle Dinner posted on
the web site. It was thought that
Lee would use some of the same photos for the newsletter.
C2.7 Buzz
Day Activities: In October, the GT AA
holds a ‘Buzz Day’, and encourages all of the clubs to participate in a
community service activity. The service
doesn’t necessarily have to occur on the same day, however it is an opportunity
for the club to perform some service as a group.
- John
Snead (JS) works with a local charity called ‘Santa Claus Anonymous’, and
suggested several opportunities for club participation. Specific opportunities include helping
to organize and staff events. One
particular event is a wine tasting evening held in December. TC suggested that this event might be a
good candidate for club participation.
- DL
suggested a MD state program that allows volunteers to train the public in
disaster management. This might be
particularly suited to people with a desire to teach and instruct.
- TC
suggested a charity that he is familiar with, ‘Christmas in April’. This charity could use people to help
work on the houses of the disadvantaged.
Typical assignments might be light construction, painting, etc.
- Finally,
all suggestions should be sent to Lee for review by the group. There are a number of opportunities,
and the club isn’t limited to just one group or event.
C2.8 Next Meeting: The next meeting time was set to Wednesday, July 10th
at 7:00PM. The meeting location will be
‘Bill Bateman’s’ in Towson. Meeting
adjourned, 9:30PM.
These minutes were written by Roy Meade. Please notify author of any omissions or
